What Is An Ostomy?

An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creating an opening for the diversion of waste from the bowel or the bladder. Ostomies are necessary when part or all the intestine or bladder are removed temporary or permanently. Conditions that may lead to ostomy surgery, include cancer, diverticulitis, polyps, birth defects, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s Disease and trauma.

What Is A Stoma?

A stoma is an artificial opening created by attaching a portion of the bowel to the skin on the abdomen, allowing the transfer of waste outside of the body into a bag or pouch. Depending upon the procedure, a stoma can be permanent or temporary, all require special care.

Understanding The Types Of Ostomy

• Colostomy - A surgically created opening in the abdominal wall allowing the passage of digested food and may be temporary or permanent, depending upon the portion of the colon involved.
• Ileostomy - A small surgically created opening in the small intestine, through which digested food passes. This procedure may be temporary or permanent, and may involve removal of all or part of the colon.

Preparation For Your Appointment for Ostomy Care

Prior to your first appointment, complete the patient questionnaire provided via email. Prepare a list of current medications, past and present wound care products, as well as insurance cards and necessary referrals.

At your first visit, we will review medical history and current health status. A Texas Colon & Rectal Specialists provider will perform a thorough assessment of your wound. Using evidenced based practice, an individualized treatment plan will be developed leading you to recovery.
